12 O’ Clock (Part XVI)

We are continuing the following conversation from the previous part of this blog-post:

Bittu requested, “Please try to convince my father. I want to celebrate Janmashtami this year. Didis, can you give me a 20 rupee note?”

Sukhwinder was alerted, “Why do you want a 20 rupee note?”

Bittu replied, “I want to return to the shop in a rickshaw.”

Sukhwinder asked, “Why do you want to go in a rickshaw? You usually run to the shop in one minute.”

The little boy replied, “Didi, somebody has spread salt and red chilies at the intersection. I have fallen ill and hurt myself twice before when I have walked near such things. Mom told me to come from a round-about route in such situations. It will take half an hour for me to reach the shop through that route. So, I want to take a rickshaw. You can deduct the amount from your payment for the tea and snacks, next month.”

Yashaswini asked, “Someone might have dropped the stuff by mistake.”

Sukhwinder said, getting up and giving Bittu a 20 rupee note, “Wait, I will tell you.”

She went out with the boy; made sure he got a rickshaw and returned after the 3-wheeler had left.

Sukhwinder came back and sat down in her chair, “We have seen this happen several times. If it is someone’s mistake, it would not fall exactly at the intersection. This kind of stuff is almost always seen fallen at a trisection or intersection.”

Yashaswini said, “This is not good. I have seen this stuff 3-4 times when I have visited my aunt’s place. These people throw the stuff after performing black magic.”

One customer at the medical store insisted that it is a foolish assumption.

To this, Yashaswini replied, “Many people will not believe it. In the previous centuries, people did not believe the concept of microorganisms because they couldn’t see it through the naked eye. Only microscopes revealed the presence of microorganisms and then only even scientists believed in them. Similarly, believers need to make some kind of device to prove the presence of black magic, as well. There is black magic and there is white magic. Cruel criminal people, who want to destroy other people, perform black magic out of jealousy. White magic is performed by experts to solve an innocent person’s problem. There is a third type of person, who leaves everything to God and tries to lead their lives in peace. My aunt is such a person.”

Sukhwinder said, “You have been referring to your aunty regularly. Tell us more about her.”

Yashaswini replied, “This is also a 12 O’clock story. Like Sardars like you suffer, being a south Indian my aunty and her family are also suffering. The main culprit is her next-door neighbor, who has an inflated ego due to her fair skin.”

There is more to it than meets the eye. Stay tuned.

To be continued…
