People decide to keep the Lord for 1 ½, 3, 5, 7 or up to Chaturdashi. In North India, people immerse the Ganesh idols in flowing water, ponds or wells. More recently, artificial tanks have been constructed for this purpose. At most of the houses in South India, the idols are made of wet unbaked clay. Village people immerse the idols in their own wells, which are present in every home.

Otherwise, people may also immerse the idols in large vessels calling on different rivers, seas and other fresh water bodies in mantra form. To purify the water, cow’s urine is used. Some people have sea water and Ganga water stored at home and they use that in the vessel. A little sandalwood powder and rose water are also poured into it. They also perform pooja to the water with fresh rose petals.

The idols are then immersed in the water after completing that day’s pooja. The next day, they pour the water under banyan, banana or pipal trees. They may also pour the water under any flowering plant at their home. In South India, this kind of eco-friendly immersion was seen for a long time.
