Hoorna Kozhakattai (Modak)

Hoorna Kozhakattai or Modak is the favourite dessert of not only Lord Ganesha but also children in South India. On the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, ajournalistreveals.com proudly presents the recipe of what the Elephant God loves most.

Ingredients:
For Filling (Hoorna):
Ground coconut – 1 cup
Jaggery – 200 gms.
Clarified butter (ghee) – 1 table spoon
Elaichi (cardamom) powdered – 5.

Outer Layer:
Rice flour – 1 cup
Maida four – 1 table spoon
Sabudana (sago) flour – 1 table spoon
Oil – 1 table spoon
Salt – ¼ table spoon.

Filling: Pour some ghee into a preheated pan. Add ground coconut into it. Mix well for 2 minutes and add powdered jiggery and ealaichi powder with salt. Mix for 3 minutes. The filling is done.
Outer Layer: Boil hot water in a bowl. Mix rice, maida and sabudana flours in another bowl. Slowly pour boiling water a little at a time over the mixture stirring continuously till it becomes a proper malleable dough. Pour a little oil and mix thoroughly.

Modak (Kozhakattai): For the next step, modak moulds can be used. It can also be done with your bare hands. Apply some oil to your hands. Take a small amount of the dough and flatten it into a chappati on your hand. Place some of the filling on the chappati and wrap the outer portion of the chappati into modak shape. Apply oil to idli plates. Place the modak in the hollows and steam till done. Serve hot or cooled.
Serves: 3-4 people.
