When one of Queen Shuratchandrika’s maid saw the old Brahmin woman, she inquired about her. Goddess Lakshmi replied, “I am Kamla and my husband’s name is Bhuvaneshwar. We live in Dwarka. Your Queen was the wife of a Vaishya in her last birth. That Vaishya was very poor. Every day the husband and wife would fight with each other about their financial status. The husband would beat his wife often.”
She added, “She was fed up with her situation and left her home. She moved about the nearby forest without having food. I pitied her and recited to her the pooja of Goddess Mahalakshmi and its procedure. She performed the pooja according to what I told her and Goddess Lakshmi was pleased. Thus, her poverty ended and her home was filled with wealth and prosperity. The couple began to live happily. They eventually died and went to live in the abode of Goddess Lakshmi for as many 1000 years as they performed the pooja.”
