The Spider’s Web (Part IV)

When Rita could speak, she said that she did not know anything about the pills. Though the officer would not believe it and registered it as an accident. To be on the safer side, Rita’s parents agreed to appoint Kartik as her attorney. It took a couple of weeks for Rita to completely recover from her traumatic experience.

Kartik had not been able to question Rita about her husband’s death. A couple of days after she returned home from the hospital, he asked Radha to come along for questioning her friend.

As they approached the next flat, they heard a conversation going on within the slightly ajar door.

“You should not have married into this accursed family, Rita,” her mother said regretfully. “Don’t you remember, his family consumed your sister?”

The brother and the sister standing outside exchanged glances, dumbfounded.

“Damage has already been done. It cannot be reversed. Rita, come back to Delhi with us,” Mr. Kaul pleaded.

At that stage, Kartik stepped forward and apologized for eavesdropping. “I am Rita’s lawyer and I would like to know everything, Mr. Kaul. Was Rita’s sister married to Fateh Singh?”

“Yes, she was.”

“Where is she now?”

“Roma is dead!”
