Today is Harishayani Ekadashi. It is also called Devashayani Ekadashi, Padmanabha Ekadashi and Yoga Nidra Ekadashi. Beginning today, Maha Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra in the milky ocean for the next 4 months. He is seen reclining on the Shesha Naga in the Padmanabha pose with Mahalakshmi serving him. Some North Indian Astrologers say that Maha Vishnu goes to the netherworlds during this time.
In Padma Purana, it is said that once Mahalakshmi asked Maha Vishnu about Him going into Yoga Nidra and protecting the cosmos. He replied that He meditates on the primordial element or the Param Tatva during his Yoga Nidra and still protects the cosmos. The Chatur Masya begins today. During these four months, no auspicious activities are conducted. But, regular pooja of God should not be stopped. During this time, ascetics do not go out of their abode for soliciting alms or travel to other holy places.
We will post further information about Chatur Masya and pooja during this time in the next post.
