Chapter 23: The Meeting That Never Happened

Joseph’s contact reached Anita Naik the following evening.

The message was simple.

Two people want to hear your side of the story. You can trust them.

For nearly twenty-four hours, there was no reply.

Then, just after sunset, Joseph’s phone rang.

“It was Anita,” he told Shalini immediately. “She agreed to meet us.”

“Where?”

“A small temple near Shivaji Park. Tomorrow morning. Eight o’clock.”

Shalini felt a flicker of hope.

At last, someone from inside the hospital was willing to talk.

The next morning, she arrived ten minutes early.

The temple courtyard was peaceful. A few devotees offered flowers while an old priest rang the morning bell.

Joseph was already waiting.

Eight o’clock came and went.

Then ten past.

By half past eight, Anita still hadn’t arrived.

“Maybe she’s running late,” Shalini said, though she didn’t believe it herself.

Joseph looked at his watch.

“She’s not coming.”

Just then, his phone buzzed.

It was the same number Anita had used.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?”

There was no voice.

Only heavy breathing.

Then the call ended.

Joseph tried calling back.

The phone was switched off.

A knot formed in Shalini’s stomach.

An hour later, Ganpat called.

His voice sounded strained.

“Anita reported sick this morning.”

“Is she at home?” Shalini asked.

“No one knows.”

“What do you mean?”

“She never returned to her hostel after yesterday’s shift.”

Shalini’s grip tightened around her phone.

The three of them stood in silence.

The meeting had failed.

Anita had vanished.

Whether she had disappeared willingly or been forced to disappear, none of them knew.

But one thing was painfully clear.

Someone had learned she was about to speak.

And they had acted before she could utter a single word.
