AI – the New Storyteller (Part IX)
The One Thing AI Cannot Do: Feel
Here is where I want to be more direct than the industry conversation usually allows.
AI generates from patterns. It analyzes what narratives have worked historically, what structures resonate, what language tends to land – and it recombines those elements with impressive sophistication. What it cannot do is understand why a story matters to a specific person in a specific moment.
It doesn’t know what it feels like to receive a difficult diagnosis. It has never been a student who finally understood something after struggling for weeks. It has never walked through a property and felt that particular mix of hope and anxiety that comes with a major life decision. It has no lived experience. No skin in the game.
Emotion in storytelling isn’t a finishing touch. It’s the mechanism. The reason stories change behavior, build trust, and drive decisions is because they carry the weight of authentic human experience. AI can approximate the form of an emotional story. It cannot generate the substance.
