Chapter 55: The Second Recording

“Then where is it?” Joseph asked.

Suresh looked at Ganpat.

“Ramesh knew cassettes could disappear. So he transferred the important part.”

“Onto what?”

“His answering machine.”

Joseph frowned.

“Lata still has their old landline.”

They were at Lata’s house within an hour.

She stared at them when Joseph explained.

“That machine hasn’t worked for years.”

“Where is it?”

“In the cupboard.”

She returned with a dusty answering machine.

Ravi Nair joined them by video call and guided Prakash through connecting a power adapter.

Nothing happened.

Then a red light flickered.

Joseph pressed PLAY.

Static filled the room.

Several ordinary messages followed.

Then Ramesh’s voice.

“If you’re hearing this, I was right to be afraid.”

Nobody moved.

“I went below the basement tonight. They’re using patient identities after death. I saw files being changed before people were moved.”

A pause.

“Some patients don’t know they’re officially dead.”

Shalini closed her eyes briefly.

Ramesh continued.

“Mahesh Sawant built the system that connects the records. Suresh knows. The administrator knows.”

Across the room, Suresh lowered his head.

“But there’s something worse.”

The recording crackled.

“They’re using people nobody will look for. Elderly patients living alone. Unidentified accident victims. Patients without families nearby.”

Shalini felt sick.

The people she had watched waiting for hours at City Care suddenly returned to her mind.

Ramesh’s voice continued.

“I copied the original access records. If anything happens to me, they’re hidden inside—”

Static swallowed several words.

Then the message returned.

“—where nobody at the hospital would think to look.”

The recording ended.

Prakash groaned.

“We’ve lost the location.”

“No,” Shalini said.

Everyone looked at her.

She remembered Lata opening Ramesh’s old trunk.

The diaries.

Photographs.

Hospital identity cards.

And one object nobody had considered important.

“His retirement photograph.”

Lata stared at her.

Shalini was already moving towards the cupboard.

Behind the framed photograph was a sealed envelope.

Joseph opened it.

Inside was a memory card.
