Chapter 54: What Ramesh Did
“Ramesh Patil?” Shalini repeated.
Ganpat stood up.
“That’s impossible.”
The cybercrime officer checked again.
“No mistake. His identification number activated your old security credentials.”
Mahesh smiled faintly.
“So your dead hero wasn’t quite so innocent.”
Joseph turned on him.
“Neither were you. Sit down.”
Anita studied the dates on the screen.
“Wait. When did Ramesh activate Ganpat’s credentials?”
The officer answered.
“Three nights before he made the cassette.”
Joseph understood first.
“He was investigating.”
Ganpat nodded slowly.
“Ramesh once asked me how the old security system worked. I thought he was curious.”
“He wasn’t,” Shalini said.
“He had discovered the hidden level.”
The officer searched further.
Ramesh had used Ganpat’s expired credentials only twice.
The second access lasted eleven minutes.
“What happened during those eleven minutes?” Prakash asked.
Nobody knew.
Then Joseph remembered.
“The cassette.”
He called Ravi Nair.
“How much tape was removed from Ramesh’s recording?”
Ravi checked his notes.
“Approximately eleven minutes.”

Joseph put the phone on speaker.
“Could that be coincidence?”
“Possibly. But I wouldn’t bet on it.”
Shalini felt a chill.
Ramesh had entered the hidden level.
Then recorded what he had seen.
Someone had removed exactly that part of his testimony.
“Who cut it?” Ganpat asked.
A voice answered from across the room.
“I did.”
Everyone turned.
Suresh.
The officers brought him closer.
“You destroyed your own brother’s evidence?” Shalini asked.
“I tried to protect him.”
“By cutting the tape?”
“Ramesh named people who would have killed him if they heard it.”
Joseph stared at him.
“He died anyway.”
Suresh lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“What did those eleven minutes contain?”
Suresh looked towards Mahesh.
For the first time, Mahesh appeared frightened.
“Ramesh described everything he saw downstairs.”
“And?”
Suresh swallowed.
“He made another copy.”
Joseph stepped forward.
“Where is it?”
Suresh gave a tired smile.
“You’ve had it from the beginning.”
Shalini froze.
“The cassette Lata gave us?”
“No.”
Suresh shook his head.
“The recording isn’t on a cassette.”
