Chapter 59: Why Anita Disappeared

Shalini turned towards Anita.

“Now you.”

Anita gave a tired smile.

“I wondered when we’d get to that.”

After Aditya died, she realised his laptop could expose everything.

Before hospital security searched his belongings, she took it.

“How?”

“I told them I was taking his personal effects upstairs.”

Instead, she hid the laptop and later placed it in the railway-station locker.

“Then you agreed to meet us,” Shalini said.

“I wanted to tell you what happened.”

“But you disappeared.”

“Mahesh found me first.”

Joseph frowned.

“He kidnapped you?”

“Not at first.”

Mahesh told Anita he had spent years gathering evidence against City Care. He knew about the hidden level and convinced her that Suresh and the administrator would kill her if she went to the police without proof.

“So you trusted him.”

“I did.”

Mahesh moved her to the warehouse, supposedly for one night.

Then he took her phone.

Anita realised too late that Mahesh wasn’t simply exposing the operation.

He was part of it.

“Why didn’t he kill you?” Prakash asked.

“He needed to know where I’d hidden Aditya’s laptop.”

“And the anonymous caller?” Joseph asked.

“Mahesh.”

The officer confirmed it.

Mahesh had made the call warning Joseph not to trust the building plans.

He had also sent the later message saying the warehouse was being emptied.

“He was guiding us,” Shalini said.

“Using you,” Anita corrected.

Mahesh wanted Suresh and the administrator exposed before Aditya’s computer was found.

“And Ganpat?” Shalini asked.

“Suresh’s men abducted him,” the officer said. “They wanted to know how much he’d seen inside the Silver Care van.”

“The attack on Mahesh’s apartment?”

“Suresh again. He knew Mahesh had kept copies of the original building plans.”

Joseph sat back.

Every warning had seemed to come from the same enemy.

It hadn’t.

Some threats were meant to stop them.

Others were meant to push them forward.

And that was why the investigation had been so difficult to understand.

They hadn’t been caught between investigators and criminals.

They had been caught between criminals fighting each other.
