Chapter 53: The Last Name

Anita pointed at the screen.

“Ganpat Jadhav.”

Shalini stared at the name.

“No.”

Joseph said nothing.

Prakash turned to him.

“Ganpat helped us.”

“That doesn’t mean Aditya trusted him.”

Joseph scrolled further.

Beside Ganpat’s name was a date from eight years earlier.

SECURITY ACCESS — LOWER LEVEL

Mahesh gave a tired laugh.

“Your helpful old policeman wasn’t telling you everything.”

“Neither were you,” Shalini snapped.

Joseph called Ganpat.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

An officer was sent to the clinic.

Twenty minutes later, Joseph’s phone rang.

Ganpat had left.

“He’s running,” Mahesh said.

Shalini refused to believe it.

Then Anita leaned towards the laptop.

“Wait.”

She opened the document attached to Ganpat’s name.

It wasn’t a payment record.

It was an email.

Aditya had written it three days before the accident.

Mr Jadhav, I found the access logs you told me about. You were right. Someone used your security code after you retired.

Joseph looked up.

“After he retired.”

Anita continued reading.

Ganpat had discovered years earlier that his old employee credentials were still active. He had complained to City Care.

Nothing happened.

Later, those credentials appeared repeatedly on nights when patients were moved through the hidden level.

“They used his identity too,” Shalini said.

Joseph nodded.

“Just like the patients.”

The door opened.

Ganpat entered with a police officer.

Everyone turned.

“Sorry,” he said. “The clinic sent me for an X-ray.”

Mahesh looked away.

Joseph showed him the screen.

Ganpat sank into a chair.

“I tried to tell them years ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Shalini asked.

“Because I had no proof.”

Anita scrolled to the bottom of Aditya’s email.

There was one final sentence.

If I can prove who activated Ganpat Jadhav’s old credentials, I can prove who controlled the hidden level.

Below it was a security identification number.

The cybercrime officer entered it into the hospital database.

A name appeared.

Not Mahesh.

Not Suresh.

Not the administrator.

Joseph stared at the screen.

“Ramesh Patil.”
