Chapter 50: What Aditya Found

“Ask him!” Anita shouted.

Mahesh looked towards the police vehicles.

Joseph stepped between him and the road.

“You’re not leaving.”

“I’m not trying to.”

“Then answer her.”

Mahesh remained silent.

Anita walked towards them, still unsteady.

“Aditya found names,” she said.

“What names?” Shalini asked.

“Patients declared dead by City Care.”

“We know that.”

“No. You don’t.”

Anita looked at Mahesh.

“Some of those names appeared in other hospitals too.”

Joseph frowned.

“The same identities?”

“Again and again. Different treatments. Different doctors. Different insurance claims.”

Prakash understood.

“A network.”

Anita nodded.

“Aditya’s software detected the pattern.”

Mahesh finally spoke.

“He shouldn’t have had access to those records.”

Anita laughed bitterly.

“That’s your defence?”

A police officer approached.

“Mr Sawant, don’t move.”

Mahesh raised his hands.

Joseph turned back to Anita.

“What was on Aditya’s computer?”

“A complete comparison. Dates, patient identities, payments and hospital codes.”

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

Mahesh did.

Shalini saw it immediately.

“You know where the computer is.”

Mahesh said nothing.

Then Suresh, pinned beside a police vehicle, began laughing.

“Tell them, Mahesh.”

“Shut up.”

“Tell them why you needed Aditya alive.”

Joseph stared at Mahesh.

“Alive?”

Suresh smiled.

“You thought he ordered the accident?”

Mahesh lunged towards him.

Two officers grabbed Mahesh.

“He’s lying!”

Anita shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone turned towards her.

“Aditya survived the accident.”

Shalini felt the ground shift beneath her.

“I spoke to him,” she whispered.

Anita nodded.

“He was conscious when he reached City Care.”

Joseph’s face hardened.

“Then what happened?”

Anita looked towards the hospital administrator.

“He ordered us to prepare Aditya for emergency treatment.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It does,” Anita said. “Because they didn’t want to kill him.”

She looked at Mahesh.

“They wanted the password to his computer.”

Mahesh stopped struggling.

Joseph stepped closer.

“Did he give it to you?”

“No.”

“Then where is the computer?”

“That’s why I disappeared.”

She reached inside her coat.

“Because I took it.”
