Chapter 49: The Last Record

“Turn it off!” Suresh shouted.

One of his men lunged for Joseph.

Prakash shoved him aside.

“Run!”

They scattered.

Joseph grabbed Shalini’s hand and pulled her behind a parked van.

Mahesh didn’t move.

Suresh stared at him.

“You planned this.”

“For years.”

“You’ll go down with us.”

“I know.”

That stopped everyone.

Mahesh looked towards Joseph.

“Keep recording.”

Suresh charged at him.

Mahesh stepped aside and Suresh crashed against the van.

Sirens grew louder.

This time, unmistakably close.

“You called the police?” Shalini asked.

Mahesh shook his head.

“Anita did.”

Joseph stared at him.

“She had a phone?”

“I made sure she got one.”

Suddenly, everything fitted.

Mahesh had helped them find the warehouse. He had allowed Anita to be seen. He had pushed Suresh into moving the records.

“You wanted the whole operation exposed tonight,” Joseph said.

“Not just City Care.”

Mahesh pointed towards the warehouse.

“Those boxes contain records from several hospitals. False deaths. Invented treatments. Insurance claims. Hidden patients. Names of everyone involved.”

Suresh scrambled to his feet.

“He’s lying!”

“No,” Mahesh said. “I’ve spent fifteen years keeping copies.”

Police vehicles turned into the lane.

Suresh ran.

He made it only a few metres before two officers brought him down.

The hospital administrator emerged from the warehouse and froze.

More officers surrounded the building.

Shalini looked at Mahesh.

“You could have exposed this years ago.”

“Yes.”

“But you didn’t.”

His silence answered her.

“You kept it going.”

Mahesh nodded.

“At first, I wanted City Care destroyed. Then the money came.”

“And people became records,” Shalini said.

Mahesh lowered his eyes.

Joseph stopped recording.

An ambulance door opened nearby.

Anita stepped out, supported by a policewoman.

Alive.

Shalini started towards her.

Then Anita saw Mahesh.

Her face changed.

“Don’t believe him!”

Everyone stopped.

Anita pointed at Mahesh.

“Ask him what Aditya found on his computer.”

Mahesh’s calm expression finally disappeared.
