Chapter 48: The Man Behind the Plans
Joseph stared at Mahesh.
“Who?”
Mahesh smiled.
Then he straightened.
The weakness vanished from his face.
Shalini understood first.
“You.”
Prakash turned towards him.
Mahesh wiped the blood from his forehead.
“You showed us the hidden entrance,” Shalini said. “You told us the plans were incomplete.”
“I told you what you needed to know.”
Joseph stepped forward.
“The anonymous call. Don’t trust the building plans.”
Mahesh said nothing.
“It was you.”
“Yes.”
“Why lead us here?”
“Because City Care had become careless. Suresh had become greedy. The administrator was frightened. I needed someone outside the organisation to expose them.”
“While leaving you untouched,” Joseph said.
Mahesh smiled.
“That was the idea.”
Shalini felt anger replacing fear.
“You built the hidden level.”

“I helped build it.”
“And the secret passage.”
“Yes.”
“Then the disaster-management story?”
“True. Originally.”
A car screeched into the road behind them.
Mahesh glanced towards it.
“We don’t have much time.”
Joseph blocked his path.
“Aditya?”
“I never ordered his death.”
“But you knew he was in danger.”
Mahesh looked away.
That was answer enough.
Shalini remembered every conversation in his apartment. Every helpful detail. Every carefully revealed clue.
“You weren’t helping us discover the truth,” she said.
“You were deciding which truth we discovered.”
Mahesh’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked impressed.
“Exactly.”
Joseph quietly moved his phone closer.
Still recording.
“Why?”
Mahesh’s eyes hardened.
“Because this hospital killed someone long before Aditya Kulkarni.”
“Who?”
“My wife.”
The approaching car stopped.
Two doors opened.
Mahesh stepped backwards.
“City Care refused to treat her until I arranged the deposit. By the time I did, it was too late.”
“And all this was revenge?” Shalini asked.
“It began as revenge.”
“What did it become?”
Mahesh didn’t answer.
Behind him, Suresh appeared with two men.
“Enough,” Suresh snapped.
Mahesh laughed softly.
“No, Suresh.”
He looked at Joseph’s phone.
“Now it’s enough.”
Suresh’s face changed.
Mahesh had known Joseph was recording.
And suddenly Shalini realised something worse.
They hadn’t trapped Mahesh.
Mahesh had brought them there because he wanted his confession recorded.
