Chapter 22: The Nurse’s Secret
For the next two days, Shalini stayed away from the hospital.
Not because she was frightened, but because she wanted whoever was watching her to believe the warning had worked.
On the third morning, her phone rang.
It was Ganpat.
“I’ve managed to find out the nurse’s name,” he said quietly.
Shalini reached for a pen.
“Tell me.”
“Anita Naik.”
“Does she still work there?”
“Yes. Night shifts, mostly.”
Ganpat lowered his voice.
“I don’t think she’s sleeping much.”
“What makes you say that?”
“I’ve seen her arrive for duty looking exhausted. Yesterday, she broke down outside the staff entrance. One of the senior administrators took her inside before anyone could speak to her.”
Shalini’s concern deepened.
“Do you think she’d talk to us?”
“I don’t know.”
There was a brief pause.
“But I think she wants to.”
That afternoon, Joseph and Shalini met at the café.
Joseph listened carefully as she repeated what Ganpat had told her.
“If Anita knows something,” he said, “she’s probably terrified.”
“So how do we reach her?”
“We don’t approach her at the hospital.”
“Why not?”
“Because if someone is watching her, they’ll notice.”
He took out his notebook and scribbled a few lines.
“I still have a friend in the nurses’ association. She might be willing to pass on a message.”
Shalini nodded.
It wasn’t much, but it was a start.
As they prepared to leave, Joseph slipped the notebook back into his satchel.
“If Anita agrees to meet us,” he said, “she may become our most important witness.”
Shalini looked towards the busy street outside the café.
She hoped they weren’t too late.
Because if Anita had been carrying the hospital’s secret for this long, someone else might already be wondering how much longer she could keep it.
