Chapter 21: An Unwelcome Visitor
That evening, Shalini was watering the tulsi plant on her balcony when the doorbell rang.
She wasn’t expecting anyone.
When she opened the door, she found a courier boy holding a small brown envelope.
“Mrs. Shalini Deshpande?”
“Yes.”
“Please sign here.”
She signed the receipt and took the envelope inside.
There was no sender’s name.
Only her address, typed neatly on a white label.
Curious, she opened it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
No letter.
No signature.
Just one sentence, printed in bold black letters.
Some memories are safer when they stay buried.
Shalini read it twice.
Then she checked the envelope again.
Nothing.
No clue to who had sent it.
Her phone rang.
It was Joseph.
Before she could mention the envelope, he spoke.
“Don’t panic, but I think we’re being watched.”
Her grip tightened on the phone.
“What happened?”
“I noticed the same dark blue sedan outside my apartment this afternoon.”
“The one from the café?”
“I believe so.”
“Did you see who was inside?”
“No. The windows were tinted.”
For a few moments, neither of them spoke.
The silence itself felt unsettling.
Finally, Joseph said, “From now on, don’t go anywhere connected to this investigation without telling me or Prakash.”
“I understand.”
After the call ended, Shalini walked to her window.
The street below looked ordinary.
Children were playing cricket.
A vegetable vendor was calling out his prices.
An elderly couple were returning from their evening walk.
Everything seemed normal.
Yet as she drew the curtains, she couldn’t shake the feeling that somewhere in the gathering darkness, someone was watching her house.
And waiting for her to make the next move.
