Chapter 20: The Missing File

Joseph called Shalini the following morning.

“I’ve found someone who worked at the hospital eight years ago,” he said. “A records clerk named Suresh Patil. He retired last year.”

“Will he speak to us?”

“He agreed to meet, but only for a few minutes.”

That afternoon, they met Suresh at a small public garden a few kilometres from the hospital.

He was a nervous-looking man in his sixties who kept glancing over his shoulder before sitting down.

“I don’t know how much I can tell you,” he said quietly.

Joseph placed the old newspaper on the bench between them.

“We’re only trying to understand what happened.”

Suresh looked at the headline and sighed.

“I remember that case.”

“Were the records altered?” Shalini asked.

He hesitated.

“I never saw anyone change them.”

“But?”

“I saw a file disappear.”

Joseph leaned forward.

“What file?”

“The patient’s original emergency admission file.”

“What happened to it?”

“It was collected by a senior administrator.”

“And after that?”

“I never saw it again.”

A cold silence settled over the bench.

“Did anyone ask where it had gone?” Joseph asked.

Suresh gave a faint smile.

“In that hospital, some questions were never asked.”

Before either of them could continue, Suresh’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen, and the colour drained from his face.

“I have to go.”

“You’ve only just arrived,” Shalini said.

“I shouldn’t have come.”

He stood up hurriedly.

As he walked away, Joseph called after him.

“Mr. Patil!”

Without turning around, Suresh raised one hand.

“Stop looking for missing files,” he said.

“They’re never just files.”

Within moments, he had disappeared through the garden gate.

Shalini looked at Joseph.

For the first time, they had proof that evidence had vanished before.

The question was no longer whether the hospital had secrets.

It was how many.
