The Hospital That Refused to Treat – Chapter 19
Chapter 19: A Familiar Face
That evening, Shalini could not stop thinking about the old newspaper.
If Joseph was right, the hospital’s secrets had not begun with Aditya Kulkarni. They had simply remained buried for years.
The next morning, she returned to the hospital—not as an investigator, but as an ordinary visitor.
She carried a small bouquet of flowers, hoping no one would question her presence.
The lobby looked exactly as it had on the night of the accident. Patients queued at the reception desk. Doctors hurried through the corridors. Volunteers guided anxious families towards different departments.
Everything appeared calm.
Too calm.
As Shalini turned towards the waiting area, a man stepped out of a lift.
He was in his early fifties, dressed in an immaculate grey suit.
For a moment, she couldn’t place him.
Then she remembered.
He was the administrator she had seen arguing with the frightened nurse on the night Aditya was brought in.
The man walked briskly across the lobby, speaking into his phone.
Without thinking, Shalini moved behind a large pillar.
She watched him enter a restricted corridor marked Authorised Personnel Only.
Just before the door closed, another familiar face appeared.
It was the same young nurse.
She looked exhausted.
The administrator said something that Shalini couldn’t hear.
The nurse lowered her head and nodded without replying.
A second later, both disappeared through the security door.
Shalini remained where she was, her heart beating faster.
The nurse’s silence troubled her more than the administrator’s stern expression.
It wasn’t the silence of someone being corrected.
It was the silence of someone who had given up arguing.
As she left the hospital a few minutes later, one thought refused to leave her.
The nurse knew something.
And sooner or later, Shalini had to find a way to speak to her—before someone else made sure she never could.
