The Hospital That Refused to Treat – Chapter 18
Chapter 18: An Old Newspaper
Joseph was waiting when Shalini reached the café that afternoon.
A folded newspaper lay on the table beside his cup of tea.
“I’ve been doing some digging,” he said.
“Did you find anything?”
“Perhaps.”
He slid the newspaper across to her.
It wasn’t recent. The pages had yellowed with age, and the edges were beginning to curl.
“This was published nearly eight years ago,” Joseph said.
Shalini adjusted her glasses and read the headline.
Hospital Cleared After Allegations of Medical Negligence
“The hospital?” she asked.
Joseph nodded.
“The very same one.”
The article reported that the hospital had been accused of refusing emergency treatment to a labourer injured at a construction site. Public outrage had followed, but an official inquiry later concluded that no rules had been broken.
“So they were cleared,” Shalini said.
“Officially.”
Joseph leaned back in his chair.
“I covered the story at the time.”
Her eyes widened.
“You did?”
“I did. And I remember something that never appeared in print.”
“What was it?”
“A ward attendant had agreed to speak to me. He claimed hospital records had been altered before the inquiry.”
“What happened to him?”
Joseph’s expression darkened.
“He withdrew his statement the day before we were due to meet.”
“Why?”
“He said he had made a mistake.”
Joseph paused.
“I never believed him.”
Shalini looked down at the old newspaper again.
A single article from eight years ago might have meant nothing on its own.
But placed beside Aditya’s death, Ganpat’s warning, and the frightened nurse, it painted a troubling picture.
Joseph folded the newspaper carefully.
“If the hospital buried one scandal,” he said quietly, “it’s possible they’ve buried others.”
For the first time, Shalini wondered whether they were investigating one mysterious death—
or uncovering a secret that had been hidden for years.
