The Hospital That Refused to Treat – Chapter 17
Chapter 17: Ganpat Speaks
The following morning, Shalini returned to the tea stall opposite the hospital.
Ganpat was already there, sipping tea from a small glass tumbler and reading a Marathi newspaper.
He looked up as she approached.
“I had a feeling you’d come back,” he said, folding the paper.
Shalini smiled. “You also had a feeling I wouldn’t forget.”
Ganpat gave a slow nod.
“I was hoping I was wrong.”
She sat across from him.
“I don’t want rumours, Ganpat. I only want the truth.”
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Traffic roared past them. An ambulance turned into the hospital gates, its siren falling silent as it entered the driveway.
Finally, Ganpat spoke.
“That night, after the young man was brought in, I was asked to clear the corridor leading to the emergency ward.”
“Who asked you?”
“One of the hospital administrators. Not a doctor.”
“Was that unusual?”
“Very.”
He looked around before lowering his voice.
“Then I saw something I still can’t explain.”
Shalini leaned forward.
“Another ambulance arrived.”
“Another accident victim?”
Ganpat shook his head.
“There was no siren. No emergency lights. Just a plain white ambulance.”
“What happened?”
“It went straight to the rear entrance. Nobody in the waiting room would have seen it.”
A shiver ran through Shalini.
“Did anyone come out?”
“I couldn’t see clearly. Two men unloaded a stretcher covered with a grey blanket and took it inside.”
“Was someone on it?”
“I don’t know.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“But whatever was happening, it had nothing to do with the road accident.”
Before Shalini could ask another question, Ganpat stood up.
“I’ve told you enough.”
As he walked away, he stopped without turning around.
“If you continue digging, don’t trust everyone who smiles at you.”
Then he disappeared through the hospital gates, leaving Shalini with more questions than answers—and a growing suspicion that Aditya’s death was only one piece of a much larger mystery.
