The Hospital That Refused to Treat – Chapter 47
Chapter 47: Sir
The shutter rose another inch.
Mahesh pointed towards the rear.
“There’s another door.”
They ran.
Joseph pushed it open and they stumbled into a narrow alley behind the workshops.
“Which way?” Prakash asked.
“Left.”
They hadn’t gone twenty metres when Mahesh stopped.
A car blocked the alley.
Its rear door opened.
A man stepped out.
Shalini recognised him.
“Suresh?”
The retired records clerk smiled.
“Hello, Mrs Deshpande.”
Joseph stared at him.
“Suresh Patil.”
“Or ‘Sir’,” Mahesh said.
Suresh’s smile vanished.
Prakash looked from one man to the other.
“You told us the administrator collected the missing emergency file.”
“He did,” Suresh replied.
“On whose instructions?” Joseph asked.
Suresh said nothing.
“Yours?”
“Get into the car.”
Nobody moved.
Joseph held up his phone.
“We’ve recorded enough tonight to destroy City Care.”
Suresh laughed.
“You think this is about one hospital?”
A door slammed behind them.
Two men appeared at the end of the alley.
They were trapped.
Shalini stepped towards Suresh.
“Why keep dead patients alive on paper?”
“Because a medical identity can be worth more than the person carrying it.”
“And Aditya found out.”
Suresh’s face hardened.
“He should have ignored what his software showed him.”
The words hung between them.
Joseph moved closer.
“So his accident wasn’t an accident.”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t need to.”
Sirens sounded somewhere beyond the highway.
For the first time, Suresh looked uneasy.
Mahesh suddenly grabbed him.
“Run!”
Joseph pulled Shalini towards the road as Prakash followed.
Behind them came shouting.
Then a crash.
They reached the corner.
A Silver Care van shot past.
Shalini caught a glimpse through its rear window.
Anita.
She was pounding against the glass.
“They’re taking her!” Shalini shouted.
Joseph started after the van, then stopped.
Mahesh had emerged from the alley.
Blood ran from his forehead.
“Forget the van,” he gasped.
“Why?”
“Because Suresh isn’t the man you need.”
Joseph stared at him.
“You just said he was Sir.”
“He is.”
Mahesh wiped the blood from his face.
“But Sir doesn’t run this operation.”
Shalini felt her stomach tighten.
“Who does?”
Mahesh looked at her.
“The person who made sure you started investigating it.”
