Chapter 52: The First Name

Two police officers accompanied Joseph and Anita to the railway station.

Shalini and Prakash followed.

The locker was near the end of the platform.

Anita inserted the key.

Inside was a black laptop wrapped in a plastic bag.

Joseph exhaled.

“After all this…”

“Don’t celebrate yet,” Anita said. “We still need to open it.”

At the police station, a cybercrime officer examined the laptop.

Anita gave him the password Aditya had once entrusted to her.

The screen came alive.

Folders appeared.

PATIENT MATCHES.

INSURANCE CLAIMS.

CITY CARE.

Then Joseph saw another.

ORIGIN.

“Open that.”

The officer clicked.

A spreadsheet filled the screen.

Dates stretched back fifteen years.

Beside the earliest entries was the same name.

Mahesh Sawant.

Shalini turned towards him.

Mahesh sat across the room between two officers.

“You didn’t join their operation later.”

Mahesh said nothing.

“You started it.”

“No.”

Anita pointed towards the screen.

“Then explain that.”

Mahesh finally spoke.

“After my wife died, I discovered how much money City Care made by manipulating emergency admissions. I wanted proof.”

“So you created false patients?” Joseph asked.

“At first, only records. Fake treatments. Fake claims. I wanted the fraud to become so large that the hospital couldn’t hide it.”

Prakash stared at him.

“That’s your explanation?”

“It got out of control.”

“No,” Shalini said. “You lost control.”

Mahesh looked at her.

“Suresh realised there was money in it. The administrator brought in other hospitals. Real patients began disappearing into false identities.”

“And you stayed,” Joseph said.

Mahesh lowered his head.

The cybercrime officer opened another file.

A diagram appeared.

Hospitals. Insurance accounts. Patient identities.

At the centre was Mahesh’s name.

Then a second document opened automatically.

Joseph read the heading.

The document contained a list of names.

Doctors.

Administrators.

Record clerks.

Insurance agents.

Joseph scrolled down.

Then stopped.

There was one final name.

Anita leaned towards the screen.

Her face drained of colour.

“That can’t be right.”

Shalini looked at her.

“Who is it?”

Anita pointed.

“Someone who’s been helping us from the beginning.”
