The Hospital That Refused to Treat – Chapter 24
Chapter 24: The Locker
The news of Anita’s disappearance weighed heavily on all of them.
For the next two days, there was no word from the police, the hospital, or the nurses’ hostel.
It was as though Anita Naik had simply vanished.
On the third morning, Ganpat called Joseph.
“I found something,” he said. “It belongs to Anita.”
An hour later, Shalini and Joseph met him at a quiet tea stall a few streets away from the hospital.
Ganpat looked uneasy.
“Yesterday, the hostel warden emptied Anita’s locker.”
“And?” Joseph asked.
“Most of her things were packed into boxes.”
He reached into his cloth bag and produced a small spiral-bound notebook.
“This had fallen behind the locker. I don’t think anyone noticed.”
Joseph opened it carefully.
Most of the pages contained ordinary notes—medicine dosages, duty rosters and reminders.
Then, halfway through the notebook, they found a page that had been torn almost completely out.
Only three words remained.
Ward… Basement… Midnight.
The rest of the page was missing.
Shalini looked at Joseph.
“Basement?”
Joseph nodded thoughtfully.
“Most hospitals have one.”
“But why would Anita write it down?”
Ganpat shook his head.
“I don’t know. The hospital basement isn’t a place where nurses usually spend much time.”
Joseph slipped the notebook into his satchel.
“We’ll have to find out what’s down there.”
As they stood to leave, Ganpat caught Shalini’s arm.
“I shouldn’t be telling you this,” he whispered.
“Tell me what?”
“The hospital officially has one basement.”
He glanced nervously towards the building.
“But the older staff say there’s another level below it.”
Before Shalini could ask another question, Ganpat walked away.
She watched him disappear into the morning crowd.
A hidden basement.
A missing nurse.
And a torn notebook page.
The mystery had just become far more dangerous.
