Chapter 25: A Voice from the Past

Joseph spent the next day trying to learn more about the hospital’s basement.

Nothing he found on the official building plans mentioned a second underground level.

“It doesn’t exist,” he said, folding the copies of the plans. “At least, not on paper.”

That evening, his phone rang.

The caller introduced herself as Lata Patil, the widow of the ward attendant Joseph had tried to interview eight years earlier.

“I found your number in my husband’s old diary,” she said hesitantly. “I think we should meet.”

An hour later, they met at a quiet park.

Lata carried a faded cloth bag, clutched tightly against her chest.

“My husband, Ramesh, never forgave himself,” she began. “He wanted to tell the truth, but he was frightened.”

“What truth?” Shalini asked gently.

Lata opened the bag and removed a small cassette recorder.

“It belonged to him.”

Joseph stared at it in surprise.

“He used to record notes after every shift,” she explained. “He said it helped him remember details.”

“Does it still work?” Joseph asked.

“I don’t know.”

She handed the recorder to him.

“My husband died of a heart attack six months after he withdrew his statement.”

Her voice faltered.

“But until the day he died, he kept saying the same thing.”

“What was that?” Shalini asked.

Lata looked directly at her.

“‘They changed the file… but they couldn’t change what I saw.'”

A silence settled over the three of them.

Joseph slipped the recorder carefully into his satchel.

“If there’s a recording,” he said quietly, “it may tell us what happened eight years ago.”

As they left the park, Shalini couldn’t shake the feeling that the past had finally begun speaking.

She only hoped they were ready to listen.
