Chapter 26: The Voice on the Tape

Joseph dug out an old cassette player from a cupboard in his apartment.

It took him nearly an hour to clean it and replace the batteries.

By evening, Shalini and Prakash were seated beside him as he inserted the cassette into the machine.

For a few seconds, all they heard was the hiss of old tape.

Then a man’s voice filled the room.

It was calm but strained.

“My name is Ramesh Patil. If anyone is listening to this… something has gone terribly wrong.”

The three exchanged silent glances.

The recording continued.

“I work as a ward attendant at City Care Hospital. Tonight, I saw an emergency admission file being taken away before the patient had even been shifted from the emergency ward.”

Joseph reached for his notebook.

“The administrator said it was a mistake… that a new file would be created.”

The tape crackled.

“I didn’t believe him.”

There was a long pause, followed by the sound of footsteps.

Ramesh’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“I followed them.”

Another burst of static interrupted the recording.

When the voice returned, it was shaking.

“They didn’t go to the records department.”

Shalini leaned forward.

“Where did they go?” she whispered, as if Ramesh could still answer.

The tape provided the answer.

“They took the file downstairs… below the basement.”

The room fell silent.

The recording continued for a few more seconds before ending abruptly with a loud click.

No explanation.

No names.

Nothing more.

Joseph slowly ejected the cassette.

“So Ganpat was right,” Prakash murmured.

“There is another level,” Joseph replied.

Shalini looked at the silent cassette recorder on the table.

For years, everyone had dismissed the rumours of a hidden basement.

Now they had heard a dead man’s voice confirm it.

The question was no longer whether the place existed.

It was what someone had been trying so hard to hide there.
