Chapter 27: The Missing Minutes

The silence in Joseph’s apartment lingered long after the cassette stopped playing.

Finally, Joseph picked up the tape and turned it over in his hands.

“Something’s wrong,” he said.

Prakash frowned. “What do you mean?”

“This recording ends too suddenly.”

He rewound the cassette and played the last few seconds again.

Once more, Ramesh’s trembling voice spoke about the hidden level beneath the basement.

Then came the sharp click.

Nothing.

Joseph pressed the stop button.

“Cassettes don’t usually end like that,” he said quietly. “It’s as if someone deliberately stopped the recording.”

Shalini looked at the cassette.

“Could the rest have been erased?”

“Possibly.”

Joseph held the cassette up to the light.

“Or…”

“Or what?” Prakash asked.

“The tape may have been cut.”

He carefully removed the cassette from its plastic case.

The brown magnetic tape looked brittle with age.

After examining it for a few moments, he sighed.

“I was right.”

Shalini leaned closer.

“Someone has cut out a section.”

“How much?”

“Only a few minutes.”

Prakash looked puzzled.

“Why remove just a few minutes?”

Joseph answered without taking his eyes off the cassette.

“Because those few minutes probably contained the most important part of Ramesh’s story.”

The room fell silent again.

If Ramesh had named someone…

If he had described what happened below the basement…

Those answers had vanished with the missing section of tape.

Joseph gently placed the cassette back on the table.

“People don’t destroy evidence unless they’re afraid of it.”

Shalini nodded slowly.

Whoever had hidden the missing hospital file years ago had also made sure that Ramesh’s full testimony would never be heard.

Unless, she thought, someone else had heard it before the tape was cut.

And if that person was still alive…

They had just become the most important witness of all.
