The Hospital That Refused to Treat – Chapter 28
Chapter 28: The Forgotten Technician
Joseph barely slept that night.
The missing minutes from Ramesh Patil’s cassette kept replaying in his mind.
By early morning, he had already made three phone calls to former colleagues.
Just before noon, one of them called back.
“I may have something,” the man said. “Do you remember Ravi?”
Joseph frowned.
“The audio technician?”
“The same one. He used to restore old recordings for the police before he retired.”
An hour later, Joseph, Shalini and Prakash were seated in Ravi Nair’s modest apartment.
Shelves lined the walls, filled with cassette players, radios and reels collected over decades.
Ravi adjusted his thick spectacles as Joseph placed the cassette on the table.
“I can’t promise miracles,” he said. “Magnetic tape is delicate.”
He examined it carefully before nodding.
“Your friend was right. A small section has been cut out.”
“So it’s gone forever?” Shalini asked.
“Not necessarily.”
The three looked at him hopefully.
Ravi smiled faintly.
“Whoever removed it did so neatly. They wanted the missing part to disappear, but they didn’t damage the rest of the recording.”
“Can it be recovered?”
“Not from this cassette.”
The hope faded from Shalini’s face.
“But…” Ravi continued, “if the original recording was copied before it was cut, another version could still exist.”
Joseph leaned forward.
“Would Ramesh have made a copy?”
Ravi shrugged.
“In those days, many people did. Especially if they believed what they had recorded was important.”
As they left Ravi’s apartment, Joseph remained unusually quiet.
Finally, he spoke.
“We’ve been asking the wrong question.”
Shalini looked at him.
“We’ve been asking who cut the tape.”
He paused.
“The real question is this…”
“Who was afraid of what those missing minutes revealed?”
For the first time, they realised they were no longer searching for a missing recording.
They were searching for the person who had wanted it silenced.
