Chapter 29: The Forgotten Box
Joseph spent the next two days tracing Ramesh Patil’s final months.
Most people remembered him as a quiet, dependable ward attendant.
No one remembered him making copies of cassette recordings.
Just as Joseph was beginning to lose hope, Lata Patil called again.
“I found something while cleaning the storeroom,” she said. “It belonged to Ramesh.”
Within the hour, Joseph, Shalini and Prakash were at her house.
Lata led them to a small wooden trunk covered in dust.
“My husband kept his personal things here,” she explained. “I never had the heart to throw them away.”
Inside were old diaries, photographs, hospital identity cards and bundles of yellowing papers tied with string.
Joseph carefully searched through the contents.
At the bottom of the trunk lay a small cardboard box.
He opened it.
Inside were three blank cassette covers.
Each had a handwritten label.

The third label made Joseph’s pulse quicken.

“There is no cassette inside,” he said quietly.
Lata looked surprised.
“I’m certain there was one years ago.”
“Do you remember what happened to it?”
She closed her eyes, trying to remember.
Then her expression changed.
“A week after Ramesh’s funeral, a man from the hospital visited.”
“What did he want?” Shalini asked.
“He said he was collecting my husband’s belongings that belonged to the hospital.”
“Did you give him anything?”
“Only a few files… and that box.”
Joseph looked at the empty cassette cover again.
Someone had taken the cassette.
Not recently.
Years ago.
Which meant the hospital had known all along that Ramesh had made a copy of his recording.
The question was no longer whether another cassette had existed.
It had.
The real mystery was whether the hospital had destroyed the copy…
Or whether someone had secretly taken it first.
