The Hospital That Refused to Treat – Chapter 34
Chapter 34: The Architect’s Sketch
Joseph spent most of the afternoon making phone calls.
By evening, one of his former journalist friends called back.
“I’ve found someone,” he said. “He wasn’t the chief architect, but he worked on the hospital renovation.”
The man’s name was Mahesh Sawant.

Now retired, he lived quietly in a housing colony on the outskirts of the city.
The following morning, Joseph, Shalini and Prakash visited him.
Mahesh welcomed them into his modest apartment, where framed building sketches still decorated the walls.
When Joseph mentioned City Care Hospital, the elderly man’s smile faded.
“I wondered if someone would ask about that place one day,” he said.
“You worked there?” Shalini asked.
“I supervised part of the renovation.”
Joseph took out a copy of the official building plans.
“Do these look familiar?”
Mahesh adjusted his spectacles and studied them for several moments.

“They’re genuine,” he said.
Then he tapped the bottom corner of the drawing.
“But they’re incomplete.”
The room fell silent.
“What do you mean?” Prakash asked.
“There used to be another sheet.”
“Another sheet?”
Mahesh nodded.
“It showed the underground service level.”

Shalini’s pulse quickened.
“So there really was another basement.”
Mahesh hesitated before answering.
“It wasn’t designed as a basement.”
“What was it designed for?”
“A disaster management unit.”
He looked at each of them in turn.
“It was supposed to store emergency equipment and provide treatment during earthquakes, floods, or terrorist attacks.”
“What happened to it?” Joseph asked.
“I don’t know.”
Mahesh leaned back in his chair.
“When the project was completed, we were told those drawings had been classified.”
“Classified by whom?”
“I was never told.”
He folded the plans carefully and handed them back.
“But I can tell you one thing.”
“What?”
“That level was never abandoned.”
Joseph frowned.
“How can you be so sure?”
Mahesh pointed to a faded blueprint hanging on his wall.
“The ventilation system for that floor had to be serviced every year.”
He paused.
“If someone was still maintaining it… then someone was still using it.”
