Chapter 33: The Anonymous Caller

Joseph replayed the brief phone call in his mind.

“Don’t trust the building plans.”

The words were too specific to ignore.

He immediately called the number back.

The recorded message was curt.

“The number you are trying to reach is switched off.”

By evening, Joseph, Shalini and Prakash were seated in Joseph’s apartment.

He repeated every word the caller had said.

Prakash frowned.

“So the official plans are false.”

“Or incomplete,” Joseph replied.

Shalini thought for a moment.

“Who would know the real layout of the building?”

“Architects,” Prakash suggested.

“Maintenance staff,” Joseph added.

“And people who’ve worked there for years,” Shalini said.

Joseph nodded.

“Ganpat.”

The following morning, the three met Ganpat at the tea stall opposite the hospital.

When Joseph mentioned the phone call, Ganpat remained silent for several moments.

Finally, he spoke.

“When the hospital was renovated about fifteen years ago, construction workers used the rear service entrance for months.”

“You remember that?” Joseph asked.

Ganpat nodded.

“One evening, I saw a contractor arguing with the chief engineer.”

“What about?”

“I couldn’t hear everything.”

He paused.

“But I distinctly remember the engineer saying, ‘This level doesn’t exist on the drawings.'”

Shalini exchanged a glance with Joseph.

“Did you ever see where that level was?”

Ganpat shook his head.

“No.”

He stirred his tea slowly.

“But after the renovation, one lift stopped going to the lowest floor.”

“It stopped?”

“Officially, yes.”

He leaned closer.

“But late at night… I’ve occasionally seen that same lift disappear below the basement.”

None of them spoke.

Traffic roared past the tea stall, but for Shalini, the sounds seemed distant.

The anonymous caller had been telling the truth.

Somewhere beneath City Care Hospital was a place that officially didn’t exist.

And someone was still using it.
