Athazagoraphobia

The term Athazagoraphobia could be a tongue-twister. But, it just means – The fear of forgetting, being forgotten or ignored or being replaced. Eminent Psychiatrist Dr. Devendra Save sheds some light on the condition.

Athazagoraphobia

Dr. Save says, “We all have one fear or another and saunter through life with these. Sometimes the fear makes us fearful and at others we subdue it. But, there are people whose lives are driven by the fear itself. People who experience fear engage with thoughts that a particular stimulus may harm them. When a fear is not justified scientifically to harm the person, they can be termed as irrational. Having said that, it is important to acknowledge that it becomes difficult for them to see their fears stemming from irrational thoughts. In families of people suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia the thought of being forgotten by the loved one is of a magnitude and they might suffer from these recurring thoughts that leave them feeling alone and desolate. Athazagoraphobia is one such phobia that makes the person fearful of being forgotten.”
