Chapter 11: The Guard’s Warning

Shalini stood watching the elderly guard until he disappeared through the hospital gates.

For a moment, she considered following him.

Instead, she ordered another cup of tea and waited.

Perhaps he would return.

Ten minutes later, he emerged from the hospital carrying a cloth bag. He glanced around cautiously before crossing the road.

When he reached the tea stall, Shalini smiled politely.

“I thought you had left.”

“So did I,” he replied with a weary smile. “Old habits. I always check if someone’s watching.”

He introduced himself as Ganpat Jadhav.

“I retired from the police department years ago,” he said. “Now I work here as a security guard to keep myself busy.”

That surprised Shalini.

“A policeman?”

“For thirty-two years.”

She immediately understood why he had seemed so observant.

Ganpat stirred his tea without drinking it.

“You asked about that accident.”

“Yes.”

He looked towards the hospital once again.

“I wasn’t on duty inside the emergency ward, but I’ve worked here long enough to know when something isn’t normal.”

“What do you mean?”

“The ambulance arrived. Doctors rushed the young man inside. That’s expected.”

He paused.

“What wasn’t expected was the number of senior administrators who suddenly appeared.”

“Administrators?”

He nodded.

“They came far too quickly. Before some of the doctors, in fact.”

Shalini frowned.

“Could they have known the victim?”

“I don’t know.”

His expression hardened.

“But I’ve never seen hospital executives run to the emergency ward for an ordinary accident case.”

Before Shalini could ask another question, Ganpat stood abruptly.

“I’ve already said more than I should.”

He placed a few coins on the counter for his tea.

As he turned to leave, he looked back at her.

“If you value your peace of mind, madam… forget what you saw that night.”

Without waiting for a reply, he walked away.

Shalini watched him disappear into the morning crowd.

His words sounded less like advice.

And more like a warning.
