Chapter 12: A Name in the News
Ganpat’s warning stayed with Shalini all the way home.
“Forget what you saw that night.”
If he had wanted to frighten her, he had succeeded.
But he had also achieved something else.
He had convinced her that there was, indeed, something worth hiding.
After lunch, Shalini sat at her dining table with the newspaper clipping, a notepad, and her reading glasses.
She wrote down everything she could remember from the night of the accident.
The time.
The frightened nurse.
The two police officers.
The covered stretcher.
Ganpat’s strange remarks.
Then she wrote one name in larger letters.
Aditya Kulkarni.
It wasn’t much to go on.
She switched on her laptop and searched for the name.
Several results appeared.
Most belonged to different people.
Then one headline caught her attention.
A local business website featured a photograph of a smiling young man receiving an award at a technology startup event.

The face was unmistakable.

She clicked on the article.
It mentioned that Aditya had recently developed software for a healthcare company and was expected to lead an important new project.
Nothing more.
No mention of the accident.
No obituary.
No tributes from colleagues.
For someone so young, the silence felt strange.
Shalini tore a fresh page from her notepad and wrote down the name of the healthcare company.
She had no idea whether it meant anything.
Perhaps it was merely a coincidence.

As she closed the laptop, her mobile phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number flashed across the screen.
