Chapter 13: The Deleted Message
Shalini continued staring at her phone long after the message had disappeared.
She tapped the screen, hoping it might reappear.
Nothing.
Only the empty chat window remained.
Her heart beat a little faster.
Someone had not only known she was asking questions—they had also found her phone number.
She tried to think logically.
Perhaps it was a prank.
Perhaps someone had sent the message to the wrong person.
But deep inside, she knew neither explanation felt convincing.
She set the phone on the table and walked to the kitchen to make herself a cup of tea.
It was what she always did when her thoughts became tangled.
As the kettle began to whistle, the doorbell rang.
The sound startled her.
She glanced at the clock.
A little after four.
She wasn’t expecting anyone.
Peering through the peephole, she relaxed.
It was her neighbour, Mrs. Fernandes, carrying a plate covered with a clean kitchen towel.
“I made coconut laddoos,” she said with a smile. “Thought you might like some.”
Shalini invited her in.
For the next fifteen minutes, they chatted about ordinary things—the erratic weather, rising grocery prices, and the noisy construction work in the next lane.
The unexpected visit calmed her.
Life felt normal again.
After Mrs. Fernandes left, Shalini returned to the dining table.
Her phone was exactly where she had left it.
She picked it up and opened the deleted conversation once more.
Still nothing.
But this time, she noticed something else.
There had been no phone number.
No name.
Just the words Unknown Sender.
A faint shiver ran through her.
Whoever had sent the warning hadn’t wanted to be identified.
She looked at the notebook lying beside her.
At the top of the page was a single name.
Aditya Kulkarni.
Shalini closed the notebook slowly.
Instead of frightening her, the message had done the opposite.
It had confirmed one thing beyond doubt.
