Chapter 14: An Old Friend
The next morning, Shalini called Prakash.
“I think we need to meet,” she said without preamble.
“I was about to suggest the same,” he replied. “The tea stall?”
She hesitated.
“No. Somewhere away from the hospital.”
An hour later, they were seated in a quiet corner of an old café that Prakash had frequented for years.
The waiter greeted him by name before placing two cups of tea on the table.
Shalini told him everything.
The newspaper article.
The online photograph of Aditya.
The strange message that had vanished from her phone.
Prakash listened without interrupting.
When she finished, he stirred his tea thoughtfully.
“If someone wanted to scare you,” he said, “they’ve made a mistake.”
“How so?”
“They’ve confirmed that you’re getting close to something.”
Shalini smiled faintly.
“I thought exactly the same.”
Prakash leaned back in his chair.
“I have an old friend who spent most of his career as a crime reporter.”
“You think he could help?”
“He knows policemen, lawyers, journalists… people who ask questions for a living.”
“Will he speak to us?”
Prakash chuckled.
“If he’s still the man I remember, he’ll speak to anyone willing to buy him a cup of tea.”
For the first time in days, Shalini felt a flicker of hope.
Perhaps they didn’t have to investigate alone.
As they finished their tea, Prakash took out his phone and searched for an old contact.
After a few moments, he smiled.
“I’ve found him.”
“What’s his name?”
Prakash looked up.
“Joseph D’Mello.”
The name meant nothing to Shalini.
Not yet.
But before long, Joseph D’Mello would become one of the most important people in her life—and one of the few willing to risk everything to uncover the truth behind Aditya Kulkarni’s death.
