Chapter 6: Too Late

Nearly an hour passed before Shalini finally approached the reception desk.

The discomfort in her chest had eased, but her unease had only grown stronger.

“Excuse me,” she said politely.

The receptionist looked up from her computer.

“Yes, madam?”

Shalini hesitated.

“The young man who was brought in after the road accident… is he all right?”

For a brief moment, the receptionist’s fingers stopped moving.

Then the professional smile returned.

“I’m sorry, madam. We cannot discuss patient information.”

The answer sounded rehearsed.

Almost automatic.

“I understand,” Shalini said. “I was there when the accident happened.”

“I’m sorry, madam.”

Nothing more.

Shalini thanked her and turned away.

As she did, movement at the far end of the corridor caught her attention.

Two hospital attendants were pushing a stretcher.

A white sheet covered the figure lying on it.

Only a pair of rain-soaked sneakers remained visible beneath the cloth.

Dark blue sneakers.

Shalini’s heart sank.

She recognized them instantly.

They belonged to the young motorcyclist.

The same shoes she had noticed while kneeling beside him on the road.

The stretcher moved quickly towards a side exit.

Not towards the emergency ward.

Not towards any area marked for patients.

Just a quiet, rarely used corridor leading away from public view.

A chill ran through her.

The young man was dead.

She was suddenly certain of it.

Yet what troubled her most was not the death itself.

Accident victims died every day.

It was the secrecy.

The nervous staff.

The frightened nurse.

The police officers who had arrived and disappeared without asking a single question.

None of it felt right.

As the stretcher vanished from sight, Shalini found herself remembering the fear in the young man’s eyes before the ambulance doors had closed.

And for the first time that night, she wondered whether the accident had been only the beginning of the story.
