The Hospital That Refused to Treat- Part 7
Chapter 7: Going Home
By the time a doctor finally saw her, it was almost midnight.
The consultation lasted less than ten minutes.
A few routine checks were performed. Her blood pressure was slightly elevated, but nothing alarming.
“Stress,” the doctor concluded, barely looking up from his computer screen. “You’ve had an upsetting evening.”
Shalini wanted to ask about the accident victim.
She wanted to ask why police officers had come and gone without speaking to anyone.
She wanted to ask why a nurse had looked terrified.
Instead, she simply nodded.
The doctor handed over a prescription and recommended rest.
A few minutes later, she was walking through the hospital lobby towards the exit.
The building seemed quieter now.
Many of the patients who had filled the waiting room earlier had gone home.
Including Prakash.
They had exchanged phone numbers before parting ways.
“Perhaps we’ll meet again under happier circumstances,” he had said.
Shalini hoped so.
Outside, the rain had stopped.
The city glistened beneath the streetlights.
Water shimmered on the roads and pavements, reflecting headlights and neon signs.
She paused at the hospital entrance and looked back.
The building stood tall and impressive against the night sky.
To anyone passing by, it looked like a place of safety.
A place where lives were saved.
Yet the feeling of unease remained.
As she waited for a taxi, her thoughts returned once again to the young motorcyclist.
His frightened eyes.
The covered stretcher.
The nervous staff.
The frightened nurse.
None of it made sense.
Perhaps she was imagining things.
Perhaps the evening’s events had simply unsettled her.
But deep down, she didn’t believe that.
The taxi arrived.
As Shalini climbed inside, she glanced at the hospital one last time.
Something had happened inside that building tonight.
She didn’t know what.
But she had a feeling she hadn’t seen the end of it.
Not by a long shot.
