Chapter 44: The Dead Man

“What do you mean, died?” Shalini asked.

Ganpat rubbed his wrists where the rope had cut into them.

“His name was Harish Vora. The hospital displayed his photograph after his family made a large donation.”

“And you’re certain it was him?” Joseph asked.

“I saw him several times. You don’t forget a face like that.”

Prakash was already searching through the papers scattered across Mahesh’s floor.

“Then why was a dead man inside that van?”

Joseph took out his phone.

“We find out whether he’s really dead.”

Before he could make the call, footsteps sounded outside.

Everyone froze.

The apartment door moved.

“Kitchen,” Joseph whispered.

They slipped inside and pulled the door almost shut.

A man entered the apartment.

Then another.

Neither spoke.

Drawers opened.

Papers shifted.

Shalini held her breath.

A phone rang in the living room.

One of the men answered.

“We haven’t found it.”

A pause.

“The old man?”

Another pause.

“Gone.”

Joseph glanced at Ganpat.

The man’s voice hardened.

“We’ll check the warehouse.”

The two men left.

Nobody moved until their footsteps disappeared down the stairs.

Prakash exhaled.

“That was close.”

Joseph stepped into the living room.

“We need to leave. Now.”

Shalini bent to pick up her handbag.

Something beneath the broken frame caught her eye.

A photograph.

She pulled it free.

It showed Mahesh standing outside City Care Hospital during the renovation.

Beside him was a much younger hospital administrator.

And between them stood another man.

On the back, someone had written three names and a date.

Joseph read them aloud.

Then stopped.

“What?” Shalini asked.

He pointed to the third name.

Harish Vora.

Ganpat stared at the photograph.

“That’s him.”

Prakash frowned.

“So our dead patient knew Mahesh?”

Joseph turned the photograph over again.

“No.”

His expression changed.

“Look at the date.”

The photograph had been taken fifteen years earlier.

The same year the hidden underground level was built.

Before anyone could speak, Ganpat’s phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

The warehouse is being emptied tonight.

Joseph grabbed his satchel.

“Then tonight is all we have.”
