Chapter 43: The Empty Apartment

“We’re not sending anyone alone,” Joseph said.

“But that’s what the message says,” Prakash replied.

“Which is precisely why we don’t obey it.”

They took a taxi to Mahesh Sawant’s neighbourhood and got out near the main road.

Joseph called Mahesh.

No answer.

He tried again.

Switched off.

The three entered the building separately, leaving several minutes between them.

Joseph went first.

Mahesh’s apartment door was slightly open.

He stopped.

“Mahesh?”

Silence.

Shalini and Prakash joined him.

Inside, the living room was in disarray.

Drawers had been pulled open. Papers covered the floor. One of Mahesh’s framed building sketches lay shattered.

“Someone searched the place,” Shalini whispered.

Joseph moved towards the bedroom.

Empty.

No Mahesh.

No Ganpat.

Prakash examined the scattered papers.

“They knew what they were looking for.”

Shalini noticed the faded blueprint that had once hung on the living-room wall.

It was gone.

“The hospital plan,” she said.

Joseph turned.

Before he could answer, they heard a sound.

A faint knock.

Three times.

Then silence.

It came from the kitchen.

Prakash opened the door cautiously.

Nothing.

Another knock.

Joseph pointed towards a narrow storage cupboard.

He pulled it open.

Ganpat collapsed forward.

His hands were tied, and tape covered his mouth.

“Ganpat!”

They freed him quickly.

“Where’s Mahesh?” Joseph asked.

Ganpat struggled to catch his breath.

“I don’t know.”

“Who brought you here?”

“Two men. They kept asking what I’d told you.”

“About the hidden level?”

Ganpat shook his head.

“The van.”

Joseph froze.

“What about it?”

Ganpat looked at Shalini.

“They wanted to know whether I’d seen inside.”

“And had you?”

Ganpat nodded.

“Once.”

“What did you see?”

His answer surprised them.

“People.”

“Patients?”

“I don’t know. But they weren’t dead.”

Shalini felt a chill.

Ganpat swallowed.

“One of them was an elderly man.”

He paused.

“I remember him because his photograph was once displayed in the hospital lobby.”

“Who was he?”

Ganpat looked at Joseph.

“A patient who died six months ago.”
