The Hospital That Refused to Treat- Part 8

Chapter 8: The Newspaper

Shalini slept poorly.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the young motorcyclist lying on the rain-soaked road.

By morning, the discomfort in her chest had disappeared, but the questions remained.

After making herself a cup of tea, she settled into her usual chair by the window and unfolded the morning newspaper.

The city carried on as it always did.

Politics.

Cricket.

Traffic complaints.

A celebrity wedding.

She turned the pages absentmindedly until a small article near the bottom of a local news page caught her attention.

Young Man Dies in Road Accident.

Shalini immediately began reading.

The report was brief.

According to the article, twenty-six-year-old Aditya Kulkarni had succumbed to his injuries shortly after being admitted to a private hospital. Police believed the accident had been caused by speeding and poor visibility due to rain.

That was it.

Barely a few paragraphs.

No witness statements.

No mention of any investigation.

No mention of the confusion she had witnessed inside the hospital.

Shalini read the article again.

Then a third time.

Something bothered her.

The report stated that Aditya had been unconscious when emergency services arrived.

But that wasn’t true.

She had spoken to him.

He had looked directly at her.

He had even tried to say something before being taken away.

It was a small detail.

The kind of thing most people would dismiss.

Yet the mistake unsettled her.

She clipped the article from the newspaper and placed it on the dining table.

Then she stared at it for several moments.

Perhaps the journalist had simply made an error.

Perhaps she was reading too much into it.

Or perhaps someone had decided that certain details were better left out of the story.

The thought stayed with her all morning.

And by lunchtime, Shalini had made a decision.

She was going to find out who Aditya Kulkarni really was.
