Chapter 31: The Visitor’s Register
The name “Sir” stayed with Joseph long after they left Lata’s house.
“It isn’t much,” Prakash said as they drove back. “Half the senior staff in a hospital could be called ‘Sir’.”
“True,” Joseph replied. “But visitors leave traces, even when names don’t.”
The following morning, Joseph returned to City Care Hospital.
He didn’t enter through the main entrance.
Instead, he walked to the security office at the rear of the building, where Ganpat was waiting.
“I thought you might come,” Ganpat said.
“I need your help.”
Ganpat unlocked an old steel cupboard and pulled out a stack of dusty registers.
“We used to record every vehicle entering through the service gate,” he explained. “Not all of them are here, but a few old books survived.”
For the next hour, the two men turned page after page.
Most entries were routine—ambulances, medical suppliers and maintenance contractors.
Then Joseph stopped.
“This date…”
It matched the week after Ramesh Patil’s funeral.
Against one entry, the driver’s name had been left blank.
The purpose of the visit read only:
Records Collection.
“There should be a signature,” Joseph said.
“There was,” Ganpat replied quietly. “Someone has torn out the bottom corner of the page.”
Joseph examined the register.
The missing piece had been removed carefully with a blade.
Not by age.
Not by accident.
By someone who wanted a single signature to disappear.
He closed the register slowly.
“If the visitor collected Ramesh’s cassette, this is probably the only official record that he came here.”
Ganpat nodded.
“And now even that’s incomplete.”
Joseph looked at the torn page one last time.
Whoever had erased that signature hadn’t destroyed the register.
They had removed only one name.
A name they believed no one should ever read.
