Chapter 37: The Photograph

Shalini called Joseph immediately.

Within an hour, she and Prakash were at his apartment.

Joseph listened as she repeated Ganpat’s words.

“A stretcher?” Prakash asked. “At night?”

Shalini nodded.

“And the men weren’t hospital staff.”

Joseph walked to the window.

“Then the entrance isn’t simply an alternative route to the hidden level. Someone is deliberately using it to avoid the main hospital.”

“For what?” Shalini asked.

“That’s what we need to find out.”

His phone rang.

Ganpat.

Joseph put the call on speaker.

“I’ve got something,” Ganpat whispered. “But I can’t talk for long.”

“What?”

“A photograph.”

Ganpat explained that one of the security cameras overlooked the rear entrance. Earlier that morning, he had managed to photograph the previous night’s footage on a monitor before it was deleted.

“Deleted by whom?” Joseph asked.

“I don’t know. When I checked again, the recording was gone.”

A message arrived on Joseph’s phone.

He opened the photograph.

The image was grainy, but clear enough.

Two men stood beside a stretcher near the underground entrance.

A sheet covered whoever—or whatever—lay on it.

Prakash leaned closer.

“Can you enlarge it?”

Joseph zoomed in.

The men’s faces remained indistinct.

But something else became visible.

One hand hung from beneath the sheet.

Shalini felt cold.

“There was a person on that stretcher.”

Joseph nodded.

Then he noticed something in the upper corner of the image.

A digital timestamp.

2:17 a.m.

At that hour, there would have been almost nobody around to witness the arrival.

“Look at this,” Prakash said suddenly.

He pointed towards the background.

Part of a vehicle was visible beyond the gate.

Joseph enlarged the photograph again.

Only a section of the number plate could be seen.

But three characters were readable.

Shalini stared at them.

For the first time, they had something that could be traced.

Not a rumour.

Not a memory.

Evidence.
