Chapter 36: The Blinking Light

“Sir, this is private property.”

The security guard was almost upon them.

Joseph folded Mahesh’s sketch and slipped it into his pocket.

“We were looking for the main road,” Prakash said.

The guard stared at him.

“The main road is behind you.”

“Then we’ve clearly taken the scenic route,” Prakash replied.

Under different circumstances, Shalini might have laughed.

The guard didn’t.

“Please leave.”

They walked back towards the lane without arguing.

Shalini resisted the temptation to look behind her until they reached the road.

“That red light wasn’t there for decoration,” she said.

Joseph nodded. “Electronic access control. For an entrance that’s supposedly abandoned.”

“And the guard arrived rather quickly,” Prakash added.

Joseph looked back towards the hospital.

“Which probably means there’s a camera.”

Shalini stopped.

“A camera?”

“If they saw us approaching the door, they may have recorded our faces.”

The thought silenced them.

They decided not to return to the café together. Prakash left first, followed by Shalini. Joseph remained behind for several minutes.

That evening, Shalini was reading when her phone rang.

Ganpat.

“Where did you go today?” he asked immediately.

“Behind the hospital.”

There was a long silence.

“Ganpat?”

“You shouldn’t have gone there.”

His voice sounded genuinely frightened.

“We found the old entrance.”

“I know.”

Shalini sat upright.

“How?”

“Security circulated photographs this afternoon.”

Her stomach tightened.

“Photographs of us?”

“Yes.”

“Why would they care if the entrance is abandoned?”

Ganpat didn’t answer.

Instead, he said, “Listen carefully. Don’t go back there.”

“What’s behind that door?”

Another silence.

Then Ganpat whispered something that made her grip the phone tighter.

“I don’t know.”

He paused.

“But last night, I saw two men enter through that door.”

“Hospital staff?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“I couldn’t see their faces.”

His voice dropped further.

“But they were carrying a stretcher.”

The call ended.

Shalini stared at her phone.

The hidden entrance wasn’t merely being maintained.

It was being used.

And whatever went through that door apparently wasn’t meant to enter the hospital through the front.
