Chapter 35: The Forgotten Entrance

Before leaving Mahesh’s apartment, Joseph stopped beside the faded blueprint.

“You said the underground level was maintained. How did workers enter it?”

Mahesh looked at him thoughtfully.

“Originally, through the service lift.”

“Originally?”

“There was another entrance.”

Shalini leaned forward.

“Where?”

Mahesh took a sheet of paper and began drawing from memory.

“The hospital had an old laundry section behind the main building. During the renovation, a service passage connected it to the underground level.”

“Does the passage still exist?” Prakash asked.

“I don’t know.”

Mahesh marked a small square on the sketch.

“But the entrance should be somewhere here.”

Joseph studied it.

“Why isn’t it on the official plans?”

“Because the laundry building was demolished years ago.”

Mahesh handed him the sketch.

“The passage may have been sealed with it.”

“May have been?” Shalini asked.

Mahesh smiled faintly.

“In construction, sealing something and making it disappear are two different things.”

The following afternoon, Shalini, Joseph and Prakash walked along the road behind City Care Hospital.

A high boundary wall surrounded the property.

Beyond it stood a newer building that appeared to house storage and maintenance facilities.

Joseph compared the area with Mahesh’s sketch.

“The old laundry should have been there.”

Prakash pointed towards a narrow lane beside the boundary wall.

They followed it.

At the end stood a rusted metal gate partly hidden behind overgrown plants.

A faded sign hung from it.

HOSPITAL PROPERTY — NO ENTRY

Joseph peered through the bars.

Behind the gate, concrete steps descended towards a locked door.

Shalini’s heart began to beat faster.

“That looks very much like an entrance.”

Before Joseph could reply, they heard footsteps behind them.

A hospital security guard was approaching quickly.

“You can’t be here,” he called.

As they turned to leave, Shalini noticed something beside the locked door.

A small red light was blinking.

The supposedly abandoned entrance had an electronic security system.

Someone was still using it.
