Chapter 41: The Second Photograph

Shalini stared at the message.

You were warned once.

Joseph reached for her phone.

“Don’t delete anything.”

“I’m not planning to.”

Prakash looked towards the window.

“Whoever followed us knows this car. We shouldn’t stay here.”

Joseph agreed.

They left Prakash’s car in the building compound and took a taxi to Shalini’s apartment.

Halfway there, Joseph’s phone rang.

Ganpat.

“Where are you?” Joseph asked.

“Near the hospital.”

“Go home. Now.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

Ganpat lowered his voice.

“The Silver Care van came back.”

Joseph sat forward.

“From the warehouse?”

“I think so. But something’s different.”

“What?”

“No stretcher this time.”

A horn sounded behind Ganpat.

Then hurried footsteps.

“Ganpat?”

No answer.

The line went dead.

Joseph called back.

Once.

Twice.

Switched off.

“We need to find him,” Shalini said.

“And walk straight into whatever frightened him?” Joseph replied. “No.”

Shalini’s phone buzzed.

Another message.

Another photograph.

This one showed Ganpat standing outside the hospital’s rear gate.

The picture had been taken minutes earlier.

Below it was a single sentence.

Tell your friend to stop.

Prakash swore under his breath.

“They’re watching all of us.”

Joseph enlarged the photograph.

“Wait.”

Behind Ganpat, the Silver Care van was partly visible.

Its rear doors were open.

Shalini leaned closer.

There was no stretcher inside.

Instead, she could make out several large metal cases.

One bore a white label.

Most of the writing was blurred.

But three words were readable.

Joseph’s expression changed.

“They’re moving records.”

“To the warehouse?” Prakash asked.

“Looks like it.”

Shalini stared at the photograph.

“Why move patient files in the middle of the night?”

Joseph was about to answer when his phone rang again.

This time, Ganpat’s number appeared.

He answered immediately.

But Ganpat wasn’t speaking.

An unfamiliar man’s voice said calmly:

“Mr. D’Mello, if you want your friend back, stop looking for the warehouse.”

Then the call ended.
