The Hospital that Refused to Treat – Part 4

Chapter 4: Something Has Happened

For a while, neither Shalini nor Prakash spoke.

The waiting room settled back into its familiar routine. Phones rang behind the reception desk. Nurses walked briskly through the corridors. Patients stared at their screens, newspapers, or simply at the clock.

Across the room, the elderly woman with the injured shoulder approached the reception desk again.

She spoke softly to the receptionist.

The young woman checked something on her computer and offered an apologetic smile.

A few moments later, the patient returned to her chair.

Still waiting.

Still hurting.

Prakash sighed.

“Poor woman.”

Shalini nodded.

Something about it troubled her. Older people often became invisible in places like this. Not intentionally ignored, perhaps, but gradually pushed aside by more urgent cases.

A nurse hurried past.

Then another.

Both looked unusually tense.

Shalini noticed one of them glancing repeatedly toward the emergency ward.

The atmosphere in the room began to shift.

It was subtle at first.

One receptionist suddenly left her desk and disappeared down a side corridor. Another lowered her voice while speaking on the phone. Even the security guard near the entrance seemed more alert.

The patients sensed it too.

Conversations grew quieter.

People looked around.

Waiting.

Listening.

Then a sharp voice echoed from somewhere beyond the emergency doors.

The words were unclear.

But the sound was enough to silence the room.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Prakash slowly folded his newspaper.

“You heard that?”

“Yes,” Shalini replied.

Her eyes remained fixed on the double doors.

A nurse emerged moments later.

She looked pale.

Shaken.

As though she had witnessed something disturbing.

For a brief instant, her eyes met Shalini’s.

Then she looked away and hurried down the corridor.

A cold feeling settled in Shalini’s stomach.

The young motorcyclist from the accident was somewhere beyond those doors.

And for the first time since arriving at the hospital, she was certain that something had gone terribly wrong.

The emergency doors remained closed.

But everyone in the waiting room knew the same thing.

Something had happened.
