Kartigai month is one of the very important months of the Hindu calendar. It also signifies the end of Chatur Masya and Deepotsava. Kartigai Krishna Paksha Ekadashi signifies the beginning of Deepavali or Diwali Mahotsavam.

On the 13th day of the waning moon, Dhantrayodashi is celebrated. This day is important since Dhanvantri appeared with nectar (Amrita) as the Devas and Asuras were churning the milky ocean. Dhanvantri is the avatar of Mahavishnu and the Latter is also worshipped at this time. The same day, Kubera is worshipped for the increase in wealth and prosperity.

Naraka Chaturdashi falls on the next day. This day signifies the death of Narakasura at the hands of Lord Krishna. The festival is celebrated by lighting oil diyas.

The new moon day after that is the darkest Amavasya in the year. On that day Goddess Lakshmi roams on the earth. She is worshipped alongside Lord Ganesha. This day is also celebrated by lighting oil diyas. Additionally, color rangolis are also created. Some people also create rangolis with seasonal vegetables and fruits or flowers and leaves.
