Bittu was thoughtful. Prem asked him, “What are you thinking about?”
He asked, “There might be several people affected by these calamities. Will the plastic, we have, be enough for all of them?”
Prem counter-questioned him, “Do you want to go into social work? Why are you asking these questions? First, complete your education and then think of such things.”
He replied, “I was just curious.”
I told him, “You have asked the right question. During such situations, social workers collect old clothes and disposable items from each home. They also go to shops to get gunny bags and sacks. Some people give them carpets, durries, etc. as well. Besides these, gunny bags are cut into pieces and weaved to make durries. White sacks are stuffed with rags and made into pillows. Old saris and nighties can be cut up to make small frocks for kids. Ladies often stitch them free of cost to help the needy.”
