Explore the Srinivasa Kalyanam (Part IV): Discover why Sage Bhrigu cursed Lord Shiva, how Vishnu’s humility led to Lakshmi’s departure and the start of the Tirumala legend.
Srinivasa Kalyanam (Part IV)
At Kailasha, Lord Shiva was indulging in joyous activities with Goddess Parvathy. Goddess Parvathy informed Him of the arrival of the Sage. Flying into a rage, Lord Shiva almost killed the Sage after stopping Her from welcoming him. Lord Shiva was furious because the Sage had disturbed Him during His private moments with Goddess Parvathy. Sage Brigu cursed Lord Shiva, saying that He would not be worshipped as an idol, and that the linga would be His symbol of worship.
Sage Brigu’s next stop was Vaikuntha. Again, at Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu was indulged in private moments with Goddess Lakshmi on Snake Ananta’s bed. Sage Brigu’s tamoguna accumulated and overpowered his good sense. He ran to Lord Vishnu and kicked His chest where Goddess Lakshmi resided. Lord Vishnu turned around to the Sage, calmly stepping down from his snake bed and performed padopachara to him.
Lord Vishnu said, soothingly, “Your feet must have hurt when you kicked My hard chest. Let me soothe your feet.”
Since Lord Vishnu owned up to His supposed mistake, the Sage returned to the place where the yagna was being performed and declared that Lord Vishnu was the right recipient of the fruits of the yagna because Lord Vishnu turned out to be the humblest of the 3 Gods. He also related what had happened in the abodes of the 3 Gods.
Back in Vaikuntha, Goddess Lakshmi considered the kicking of Lord Vishnu’s chest by the Sage a gross insult to Her because it was Her abode. Lord Vishnu explained to her that He had removed the third eye, symbolising the Sage’s ego, from the foot of the sage under the excuse of the padopachara. Still offended, She left Vaikuntha to go to Karaveerapura (modern-day Kolhapur). This incident happened due to a very important reason. Lord Vishnu began to miss Goddess Lakshmi, became depressed and began wandering in jungles and mountains. He, finally, landed on Sheshachala.
